ChatGPT and Notion AI recently emerged as winners under the Product of the Year category of the 2022 Golden Kitty Awards. ChatGPT was the overall winner with Notion AI coming second. The Golden Kitty Awards are held annually to recognize top products launched on Product Hunt. The competition is split into 24 categories ranging from Productivity to AI.

For a product that’s considered the fastest-growing consumer application in history, with an estimated 100 million monthly active users in January 2023 alone, just two months after launch, it was inevitable for ChatGPT to take the Product of the Year crown. The real shocker and excitement for me, especially as an avid Notion user, is Notion AI being on this list, much less coming second after ChatGPT.

I regularly use both tools in my daily work, however, after the awards, I took a keen interest in comparing the two, and I would like to share some observations. But first, what are these tools?

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot model developed by OpenAI. It is based on the GPT-3 language model and is designed to generate human-like text responses to user input. The model has been trained on a large dataset of text from various sources and has the ability to generate coherent and contextually appropriate responses to a wide range of questions and topics. ChatGPT is a powerful tool for automating customer service and providing personalized recommendations. It can be integrated into different applications and can be used for various purposes such as content creation, and information retrieval.

Notion AI, on the other hand, is a feature offered by Notion, a popular productivity and collaboration tool. Notion AI is a set of AI-powered tools that simplify tasks and automate repetitive actions. It uses machine learning to provide suggestions, completions, and formatting options based on the user’s inputs, allowing users to focus on their content rather than formatting it. Notion AI also offers templates and pre-made blocks that users can use to create different types of pages. With Notion AI, users can save time and increase efficiency by relying on AI to perform repetitive or time-consuming tasks. The Notion AI feature is highly customizable and can be tailored to meet the specific needs and preferences of individual users and teams. Overall, Notion AI is a valuable tool for anyone looking to streamline their workflows and boost productivity.

ChatGPT and Notion AI are both cutting-edge AI tools that aim to improve productivity and streamline tasks. However, they differ significantly in terms of their purpose and scope, accessibility, user interface and experience, data training, customization, and cost structures.

Purpose and Scope: ChatGPT is a large language model that can be integrated into various applications to perform a wide range of tasks, such as answering questions, generating summaries, and completing tasks through text generation. Its purpose is to provide an AI-powered tool that can be integrated into applications and used to perform various tasks through natural language processing. On the other hand, Notion AI is a feature within the Notion platform that is designed to simplify and automate tasks within the platform. Additionally, it offers pre-made templates and blocks that can be used to quickly create different types of pages, such as notes and databases. It provides suggestions, completions, and formatting options based on the user’s input, allowing for faster and more efficient work within the platform.

Accessibility: For personal use, ChatGPT can be accessed by logging into an OpenAI account. For developers, ChatGPT can also be accessed through the OpenAI API, which requires a subscription to the API to use. The second option applies strictly to developers and organizations that have the technical expertise to integrate the API into their applications. In contrast, Notion AI is included with a Notion subscription and can be accessed by logging into a Notion account. This makes it accessible to a wide range of users who are already using the Notion platform.

User Experience and Interface: In terms of user experience, ChatGPT offers a conversational interface that makes it easy to use. ChatGPT can be integrated into an application and interacted with through the application’s user interface. This means that the user interface for ChatGPT is determined by the application that it is integrated into and may vary from application to application. On the other hand, Notion AI provides a more seamless and integrated experience within Notion. It provides suggestions, completions, and formatting options based on the user’s input within the Notion platform. This means that the user interface for Notion AI is integrated within the Notion platform and is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive. With Notion AI, users don’t have to leave the platform to complete a task, which can improve productivity and simplify workflows.

Training Data: ChatGPT is trained on a diverse range of data from the internet, including text from websites, books, and more. This means that it has a broader range of knowledge but may not be as specialized as Notion AI for tasks within the Notion platform. Notion AI on the other hand, is trained on data specific to the Notion platform and its users. This means that it is specifically designed to be effective within the Notion platform and to provide relevant suggestions and completions for the tasks performed within the platform.

Customization: ChatGPT can be customized and fine-tuned for specific use cases through the OpenAI API. This allows organizations and developers to tailor the language model to their specific needs and use cases. Notion AI provides a set of pre-defined suggestions and completions based on the user’s input. While these suggestions and completions can be useful, they may not always fit the specific needs of each user.

Cost: ChatGPT was launched as a free tool in November 2022 and can still be accessed freely. However, OpenAI recently announced ChatGPT Plus. The new subscription plan will be available for $20/month, and subscribers will receive a number of benefits. Paid subscribers will be given priority access to the AI chatbot, even during peak time where free users would have to wait. They will also get faster response times and priority access to new features and improvements. Additionally, there is a cost attached to using ChatGPT through the OpenAI API which varies based on the API usage and the specific application it is integrated into. This means that the cost of using ChatGPT may be higher than using Notion AI, depending on the specific use case and the level of API usage. On the other hand, Notion offers several subscription plans, including a free version, making it accessible to a wide range of users.

ChatGPT and Notion AI both offer distinct capabilities and can boost productivity in different ways. They tackle these objectives from different perspectives and have distinct strengths and limitations. It is essential to consider these distinctions when deciding which tool is most suitable for a particular use case.

ChatGPT provides a more versatile tool for generating text and completing tasks, while Notion AI offers a more integrated and streamlined experience for users within Notion. The decision between the two ultimately depends on the user’s specific needs and goals. If a user is looking for a flexible and versatile tool for generating text and completing tasks, ChatGPT may be the better option. On the other hand, if a user is looking for a more integrated and streamlined experience within a productivity tool, Notion AI may be the better choice.
